Girls’ school uniforms have everyone in a spin

Are you worried that school uniforms might be restricting your daughter from being more active and participating in sport?

There is a growing level of concern that uniforms by the very nature of their design are doing just that.

We couldn’t agree more!

Although to be fair, the concern may relate mostly to the school uniform tunics, which have probably been designed for sedentary studying as first priority and physical activity secondary.

However at Skortshop our focus in on freedom of movement. And we have designed our sports uniforms skorts so that girls can be as active as they like.

We specifically came up with a garment that is flattering and comfortable for girls so they can move around and play sport without feeling self-conscious. If girls are comfortable in their sports uniform then surely they are more likely to forget about themselves and just enjoy playing sport or running around the playground at lunchtime.

So are skirts/dresses or shorts more conducive to helping girls be more active?

We say both are!

Our skorts are actually both garments all in one .. a flattering skirt AND in-built shorts.

Our Skortshop skorts are a great sports uniform solution for all primary school age girls.

Super cute for the new kindies and prep school girls who, at age 5 beginning school, are likely to be quite used to wearing dresses, possibly having spent years dressed in Elsa or Rapunzel garb.  Starting from size 2 our skorts are ideal for the very petite girls who may otherwise find it difficult to get uniforms to fit.

We all know our kids need to be active.  The Australian Government guidelines for children aged 5-12 years say that being physically active is good for kids’ health and creates opportunities for making new friends and developing physical and social skills.

And let’s face it, it can be challenging these days to get kids to step away from computer screens.  We certainly don’t need further obstacles like restrictive and uncomfortable uniforms that make girls feel self-conscious, which then becomes a reason not to participate in sport.

This is the 21st century and without doubt we need clothing to reflect modern attitudes to girls and sports.  We need to encourage them to participate more and wearing a stretchy and comfortable sports uniform is a great start.

Of course there might be some girls that prefer to wear shorts. That being said, quite often these can be baggy and ill-fitting and they often need to wear bike short underneath for comfort and practicality anyway.

FYI, we have additionally designed super comfy bike shorts that can be worn under school tunics.  These help solve the problem of those pesky school uniform tunics.  Designed to fit well, our bike shorts are another practical Skortshop garment.

Last year the Turnbull government instigated the Girls Keep Moving campaign in 2016. Although targeted at teenagers, it seems pretty obvious that if we want girls to continue sport in high school then we need to plant the seeds in primary school. There are many different sports that begin in early years such netball where girls can start as young as 5, such as with the NetSetGo program.

Many schools across Australia are loving our Skortshop skorts and bike shorts. Great for prep schools and kindergarten girls, they are worn up to year 6. They’re great quality AND they’re Australian made (from Australian milled fabrics what’s more).
